Of Sardinian origins, Gruff discovered hip hop while living in the northern city of Torino. He started as both a break dancer and a DJ in 1982. Working in Paris in 1986, he met french B-Boyz like Nicolà, Jaid, and Solò. Traveling to Bologna in 1991, DJ Gruff joined the Isola Posse All Stars.

Along with Neffa and Deda, DJ Gruff was part of the creative triad that made up the influential Sangue Misto.

Gruff is part of the Alien Army, a group of accomplished Italian turntablists.
