William Ackerman is a Grammy Award winning guitarist, composer, and producer. Ackerman founded [l=Windham Hill Records] in 1976. He recorded several solo guitar albums and signed folk and acoustic artists including [a=Alex De Grassi] (his cousin), [a=Robbie Basho] and [a=Linda Waterfall]. By the end of the decade Ackerman was signing other acoustic instrumentalists who did not fit into the folk music category. Windham Hill would become known as a leading label for new age music though Ackerman has since distanced himself from that term.

Ackerman has produced numerous works by a wide variety of musicians for Windham Hill. He is also responsible for the signing of many of the label's most successful artists including [a=Michael Hedges], [a=Shadowfax], [a=George Winston] and [a=Mark Isham]. Ackerman stepped down as Windham Hill CEO in 1986 and in 1992 he sold the label to BMG.

Ackerman's albums have repeatedly climbed the Billboard jazz and new age charts, often reaching the Top 10. Ackerman won a Grammy Award for his 2004 release "Returning", in which he reinterpreted and rerecorded music from his early albums. The album also peaked at #6 on the Billboard chart. Ackerman's 2008 release "Meditations" also was nominated for a Grammy.
