The Haunted was formed in Sweden in 1996 by Patrik Jensen (guitar). He was looking for some members so he could start his new project. He was joined by Adrian Erlandsson (drums), John Zwetsloot (guitar) and Jonas Björler (bass). John Zwetsloot, however, didn't fit the musical direction the band was heading in so he was replaced by Anders Björler. They continued to rehearse, but without a vocalist. Adrian eventually left the band in order to play full-time with Hyperhug. He was replaced by Ole Öhman, but only for a short time. During a live show Hyperhugs vocalist had his hearing severely damaged. This resulted in Hyperhug splitting up and then Adrian returned to the band. Afterwards they finally found a vocalist by the name Peter Dolving.
The band then recorded their self-titled album, "The Haunted", in Fredman Studio in Gothenburg. It was released in 1998 and received a lot of positive reviews. However, after a tour with Napalm Death Peter Dolving left the band. He was replaced by Marco Aro who turned out to be the perfect replacement. In 1999 the legendary American Thrash band Testament wanted to tour with them in the US but then Adrian left the band in order to play with Cradle of Filth. Patrik Jensen then got in contact with his Danish friend Per Möller Jensen (ex-Invocator, Konkhra). He agreed to join them and the band then embarked on the tour.
After the tour was done they began working on the second album. The result was "The Haunted Made Me Do It" which was released in 2000. It was followed by the live album, "Live Rounds in Tokyo", in 2001 and a DVD, "The Haunted - Caught On Tape", in 2002. In 2003 "One Kill Wonder" was released. After the release Marco Aro announced his departure. He was replaced by the man he replaced earlier, Peter Dolving.
Their first album with Peter Dolving back at the helm (and signed by a new deal with Century Media), was entitled rEVOLVEr. The new album was released in October 2004 and named as it was to convey the evolution of the band and the music it plays as a whole. "rEVOLVEr" was met with a fair amount of fan support and critical acclaim, and the band toured the world extensively in support of it, including a second stage spot at Ozzfest 2005. In February 2 of 2005, Marco Aro played his last show in Stockholm, Sweden but as a guest singer.
The Haunted's fifth studio album, The Dead Eye, was released on October 30, 2006 in Europe and so far has been a huge success, showing a more sinister side to Dolving's vocals and a more technical, haunting musical display. It was released in the USA on October 31, 2006. They later toured Europe and toured with Dark Tranquillity, Into Eternity, and Scar Symmetry for the North America Metal For The Masses tour. They recently toured Europe for the Cursed Earth tour with bands like Wolf, Municipal Waste, and Lyzanxia and took a break to later return to play in tours and some shows in Russia.
Their 6th studio album Versus was released on September 17-27, 2008 in Europe and October 14 in the USA.
