Born on the 9th of September 1929 in Toulouse, France, from a baryton singer father and piano teacher mother.

Starts as a songwritter in the early 1950s.

Debuts as a singer in 1955, on the stage of Lapin Agile, Montmartre Cabaret.

His debut release comes out in 1959, with very minor success, despite a tour with [a=Dalida].

In 1962, a jazz influenced collaboration with [a=Michel Legrand] becomes his breaktrough success, both commercial and critical.

In 1964 he teams up with [a=Baden Powell], the first of a long term relationship with Brazil sounds and musicians.

In the mid-80s he is dropped by his record company [l=Barclay] due to disappointing record sales.

He then moves to New York, where he records a funk-tinged album, Nougayork, a massive seller and award winning album that brings him to the attention of a whole new audience.

After this New York experience, he goes back to his jazz roots, to which he incorporates some world music elements with collaborations with [a=Didier Lockwood] or [a=Ray Lema].

He dies on March 4, 2004, his ashes scattered in the Garonne river in his Toulouse hometown.

Later in 2004, legendary label [l=Blue Note] releases a collection of his last recordings "La Note bleue".
