Violin player, Hugo could also play oboe, trumpet, double bass and viola.

During the 20s & 30s he played with symphony orchestras and gave music chamber concerts, while also undertaking dance band work.

After the war he conducted several orchestras and was appointed music director of the Royal Ballet in 1957, then the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 1960.
