He was Johnny Cash's first guitar player and invented Cash unique country style with his simple 'boom-chicka' guitar patterns. [i]Walk The Line[/i] is a great example of his style.
Perkins way of playing was one of the factors that made Sam Phillips sign them up for a record deal at [l=Sun Record Company]. When he first heard them, he didn't like what they played, but he liked [i]how[/i] they played it.
He died tragically of severe third degree burns and smoke inhalations after an accident in his house when Perkins fell asleep with his lit cigarette in his hand. He was only 40 years old.
