Shemsu Hor was formed late in 1997 as a duo of [a=Jason Just] and [a=Mark Grady], both from the Palmerston North gothic band [a=Burnt Weeping Eyes]. Shemsu Hor moved from 'side-project' status to a more focused effort with the dissolution of Burnt Weeping Eyes in 1998.
Taking Kemetic mythology and cosmology as their primary theme, Shemsu Hor recorded the [r=591496] EP during the year between 1997 and 1998, at Just's own Symbolique Studios. Memories of the Dawn was also to become the first CD release from the New Zealand recording label [l=Mediatrix Publishing], co-founded/directed by Just.
Following the recording of the EP, Grady left New Zealand, with Shemsu Hor remaining a solo project of Just. Further Shemsu Hor tracks were recorded between 2000 and 2003, but the project was ultimately discontinued.
Shemsu Hor material that had been planned for an album called Onnu was subsequently adopted and reworked by Just's new project [a=Distorture].
