Porthos started his career as a guitarist with Lovy du Zaïre, and later [a=Orchestre Kara] in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. In pursuit of greater success he eventually moved on to Lomé, Togo and again to Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, where he was a member of [a=L'African All Stars].
While a member of that group he ended up in Paris and quickly adapted the Soukous style of the Congos to the new recording techniques (and Kinshasa ex-pats) that were available in the city.
