American singer, songwriter, producer and DJ Ray Lugo is internationally known to groove music connoisseurs as a renaissance man, having released music across a broad range of genres both as a solo artist, as well as with his long standing groups: Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra, Ray Lugo & The Boogaloo Destroyers and side projects: Los Terrificos, and the L.E.S. Express.
His volume of work contains over 100 discographic credits and he has recorded and performed with artists across a wide range of musical styles including Charlie Hunter, Joe Bataan, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Manu DiBango, BeatFanatic, Faze Action, Roy Davis Jr., Simbad, Diesler, Lack of Afro, Sabo, and with members of groups such as Matisyahu, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, King Sunny Ade, Brownout, DJ Logic, Antibalas, and many others.
Lugo grew up on the streets of “Golden Era” New York City, immersed in the vibrant art and music scenes that influenced his work over the years and shaped the strong DIY ethic he is known for.
In 2001 he formed the Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra, after becoming intrigued by the music of Fela Kuti and West African Funk. The band would go on to perform live in over 30 countries, on some of the world’s most prestigious stages and Festivals. Their upcoming fifth studio album, “Tremendo Funky Funky” is set for release in early 2015.
Following the enthusiastic response to his 2009 L.E.S. Express project, Lugo set out to explore his long-held interest in the classic “Boogaloo” sound of 1960’s New York, eventually forming Ray Lugo & The Boogaloo Destroyers in 2011, culminating with the group’s critically-acclaimed debut album, “Mi Watusi”, which has been broadly celebrated by connoisseurs, fans and DJ’s alike.
In 2012, he debuted his first solo album, “We Walk Around Like This”, embracing the sounds of Bahia, Lagos, Kingston, San Juan, and Harlem all under one umbrella and further echoing Lugo’s eclectic tastes.
His new album with The Boogaloo Destroyers, "¡Que Chevere!" is out now on Freestyle Records.
