Hippopotamus formed in New York City in the early nineties, and pushed the boundaries of musical structure for over eleven years. This instrumental trio evolved to incorporate vastly diverse influences.
"...a slightly funky, slightly difficult instrumental power trio, perverting its compositions with mathematical precision, jazz fusion smarts and cloud-forming dissonance."
- Jordan N. Mamone, CMJ New Music Report
"Some rock bands get into improv; others get into drum-n-bass. These locals make good use of both. A rock improv trio who get around the noodliness sand-trap with a drummer who makes his own double-time breakbeats Hippopotamus concentrate more on grooves, and not draggy ones: they work from the drums up, and they know what breakbeats are for."
- Douglas Wolk, Village Voice
"moody electric explorations of various sonic themes."
- Dusty Groove America
"Music about evoking different moods, the creation of different environments. Guitar notes sometimes ring out and hang in the air, giving well placed space to an often neurotically overstuffed cityscape. Nice to hear stimulating music that doesn't hit one in the face, but rather takes its own time to get there."
- Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery Newsletter
"the contemporary trio's common goal: three individual elements united to create a new and unique fourth sound, while stressing each contributing element. Each song seems to develop as a conversation among the band members, hooking, curling, and winding along. 3 Sounds may have distant cousins in the Chicago post-Rock scene, but it stands apart as its own entity."
