Berlin-based artist Jamie Drouin (Canadian, b.1970) explores the materiality of sound – unique perceptual and sculptural sonic interchanges using simple, formal procedures. By applying one or two systems of change to a basic sound, such as white noise static or sine wave, his works highlight the subtleties of experience possible within these common materials.
Reducing sound to its component parts, each of Drouin’s projects examine a particular type of acoustic phenomenon. This procedure-driven process allows the subject matter to bring forth its own forms, and opens the potential for listeners to not only have a revealing perceptual experience, but also to understand the elements creating it.
Drouin’s work has been featured at numerous international venues, including the Henry Art Gallery (Seattle), Biennial of the Americas (Denver), Mutek (Montreal), TodaysArt (The Hague), Communikey (Boulder), and the Montréal Museum of Contemporary Art (Montreal).
