About the Conductor

András Ligeti earned his diploma as a violinist and a conductor, won several awards as a violin-player and received a grant named after Sir George Solti in his early years as a conductor. He worked with Claudio Abbado (Mahler Youth Orchestra, 1985) and conducted the Vienna Modern Cycle in cooperation with him in 1991. He joined the Budapest Radio Orchestra as an associate conductor in 1985, and was the group’s leading conductor between 1989 and 1992. He is currently music director of the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra, Matáv in Budapest, a post he has held since February 1997. In this short time he has developed that orchestra into a vibrant, exciting group that excels in the Romantic and Modern repertory. He is regularly invited to perform by leading orchestras of several continents. Since January 2001 he has been the principle guest conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
